Intensive Therapy Programmes
Intensive therapy blocks involve delivering physiotherapy sessions more frequently over a concentrated period of time, usually . This increased frequency and repetition allows children to practise movement patterns consistently, helping strengthen neural pathways and promote neuroplasticity.
Research and clinical experience show that intensive therapy can improve:
- Motor learning and movement quality
- Strength and endurance
- Balance and coordination
- Walking and mobility
- Functional independence
- Confidence and participation
- Goal attainment and long-term outcomes
By repeating functional activities regularly and consistently, children are often able to develop new movement skills more efficiently than through lower-frequency therapy alone.
The Benefits of Intensive Therapy
One of the greatest advantages of intensive therapy is the opportunity for high levels of repetition and practice in a short period of time. This repetition helps children build strength, refine movement patterns, and develop greater confidence in their abilities.
Intensive blocks can be particularly beneficial for:
- Children learning new motor skills
- Post-operative rehabilitation
- Children with neurological conditions
- Managing muscle tone and movement disorders
- Improving walking and mobility
- Developing endurance and physical fitness
- Preparing for equipment use or orthotics
- Accelerating progress towards specific functional goals
Many families notice improvements not only in physical ability, but also in confidence, motivation, independence, and participation in everyday activities.
Specialist Intensive Therapy Approaches
Spider Cage Therapy
Spider Cage Therapy uses a Universal Exercise Unit (UEU) with elastic support cords to help children safely practise functional movements such as standing, walking, sit-to-stands, kneeling, and balance activities. The support system allows children to work on movements for longer periods while improving strength, posture, balance, and motor control.
TheraSuit® Therapy
TheraSuit® therapy combines resistance and postural support to improve alignment, body awareness, muscle activation, and movement quality. It is particularly effective within intensive blocks for children working on strength, coordination, postural control, and functional independence.
Electrical Stimulation Therapy (NMES & FES)
Electrical stimulation supports muscle activation, strength development, and movement retraining by stimulating targeted nerves and muscles. This can help improve functional movement patterns, walking ability, muscle tone management, and neuroplasticity.
SDR Rehabilitation
We provide highly specialised pre-operative and post-operative rehabilitation for children undergoing Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR). Intensive rehabilitation is essential following SDR to help children adapt to changes in muscle tone, rebuild strength, and develop improved movement patterns and mobility skills.
Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)
DMI therapy uses dynamic exercises to stimulate automatic postural responses and support progression towards developmental milestones. Intensive DMI sessions can help improve trunk control, balance, coordination, and functional movement skills.
Gait & Treadmill Training
Treadmill training provides repetitive walking practice in a controlled environment, helping improve walking pattern, endurance, balance, and confidence. Intensive gait training can be highly effective for children learning to walk or developing greater independence with mobility.
Hydrotherapy
Family-Centred, Child-Led Care
We understand that intensive therapy can feel like a significant commitment for families, which is why we prioritise creating programmes that are supportive, realistic, and enjoyable for both children and parents.
Our sessions are designed to be motivating, play-based where appropriate, and centred around building confidence as well as physical skills. Families are fully involved throughout the process, and we provide guidance, education, and home programmes to help carry progress forward beyond the intensive block itself.
At Mini Wonders, our goal is always to help children achieve meaningful outcomes that positively impact everyday life, independence, and participation.
