Autism & Movement Support
Autism Spectrum Disorder (often referred to as autism) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a child experiences the world, communicates, processes sensory information, and interacts with others. Autism is a spectrum, meaning every child is different, with their own strengths, challenges, and support needs.
While autism is not primarily a physical condition, many children experience differences in motor development, coordination, balance, posture, muscle tone, and body awareness. Some children may present with delays in gross motor skills such as running, jumping, or climbing, while others may appear physically capable but experience difficulties with motor planning, coordination, fatigue, or engaging in structured physical activities. Sensory processing differences can also impact movement, attention, and participation in therapy.
At Mini Wonders, we recognise that movement, confidence, and physical development play an important role in a child’s overall wellbeing and independence. Our specialist paediatric physiotherapy team provides supportive, flexible, and child-centred therapy for autistic children, tailored to their individual sensory profile, interests, communication style, and developmental stage.
We understand that engagement is key. For many autistic children, therapy needs to be predictable, structured, and enjoyable to feel safe and meaningful. We take time to build trust and adapt each session to the child’s preferences, using play, movement-based activities, visual supports where helpful, and special interests to encourage participation. Our aim is always to make physiotherapy a positive experience that feels motivating rather than overwhelming.
We focus on helping children develop confidence in their bodies, improve coordination, and build functional movement skills that support everyday life at home, school, and in the community.
Our Physiotherapy Support May Include:
- Thorough physical assessment and identification of motor and functional needs
- Support for gross motor development such as jumping, running, climbing, and balance skills
- Hands-on therapy to guide movement, coordination, and motor planning
- Postural control and core stability development
- Balance and coordination training
- Strength and endurance building
- Sensory-informed movement activities to support engagement and regulation
- Support for confidence and participation in physical play and PE activities
- Fatigue management and graded activity participation where needed
- Daily home exercise programmes adapted for routine and consistency
- Advice on equipment such as seating systems, movement aids, or supportive positioning where appropriate
Where beneficial, we may also incorporate hydrotherapy, treadmill training, obstacle courses, circuit-based therapy, or intensive therapy blocks to support motivation, repetition, and skill development in a structured but enjoyable way.
We work closely with families, schools, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure a consistent and supportive approach across all environments. We understand the importance of routine, predictability, and communication, and we adapt our therapy style to suit each child’s needs and comfort level.
At Mini Wonders, we focus on building confidence through movement, celebrating progress in all its forms, and helping each child feel successful in their own way.
