Down’s Syndrome
Down’s Syndrome is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra copy of chromosome 21. Children and young people with Down syndrome often have their own unique strengths, personalities, and abilities, but may also experience differences in muscle tone, strength, balance, coordination, and motor development that can impact physical skills and milestone achievement.
Many children with Down syndrome present with hypotonia (low muscle tone), joint hypermobility, reduced postural stability, and delayed gross motor development. These physical differences can make activities such as sitting, crawling, standing, walking, running, and climbing more challenging and may lead to children tiring more quickly during physical activity. Some children may also require additional support with balance, endurance, coordination, and developing confidence with movement.
At Mini Wonders, we understand that every child with Down syndrome develops at their own pace. Our specialist paediatric physiotherapy programmes are tailored specifically to each child’s stage of development, strengths, and individual needs, helping them progress towards meaningful milestones while building confidence, independence, and enjoyment in movement.
We believe children achieve the best outcomes when therapy feels engaging, motivating, and fun. Our sessions are designed around play, games, movement activities, obstacle courses, music, and functional tasks that encourage active participation while developing important physical skills. By making physiotherapy enjoyable and child-led, we help children feel confident, successful, and excited to move.
Our Physiotherapy Support May Include:

Depending on the child’s goals and physical needs, therapy may also include hydrotherapy, treadmill training, intensive therapy blocks, Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI), Spider Cage Therapy, TheraSuit® therapy, and strength-based rehabilitation programmes.
We work closely with families, nurseries, schools, and wider multidisciplinary teams to provide consistent support across all environments and ensure therapy remains meaningful within everyday life. Our focus is always on helping children participate as fully and independently as possible in the activities that matter most to them and their families.
At Mini Wonders, we celebrate every milestone and achievement. Our aim is to support children with Down syndrome to develop confidence in their movement, maximise their physical potential, and enjoy active participation in play, learning, family life, and the wider community.
