Condition

Rett Syndrome

Rett Syndrome is a rare neurological and developmental condition that primarily affects girls and is caused by a genetic change that impacts brain development. Children with Rett syndrome typically develop as expected in the early months of life, but then begin to experience a period of developmental regression where previously acquired skills such as speech, purposeful hand use, mobility, and coordination may be lost or significantly reduced.

As the condition progresses, children may experience changes in muscle tone, movement control, balance, breathing patterns, and communication. Many children present with a combination of increased muscle stiffness (hypertonia), reduced mobility, motor planning difficulties, and challenges with postural control and functional movement. Hand movements may become repetitive or involuntary, and purposeful use of the hands may decrease over time.

At Mini Wonders, we understand that Rett syndrome presents complex and evolving challenges for both children and their families. Our specialist paediatric physiotherapy team provides compassionate, individualised care that focuses on maintaining and maximising physical abilities, supporting comfort, and enhancing quality of life at every stage of the condition.

We take a highly personalised, child-centred approach, recognising that goals will change over time. For some children, therapy may focus on maintaining mobility, posture, and joint range of movement, while for others it may prioritise comfort, positioning, respiratory support, and participation in meaningful activities. We work closely with families to ensure therapy reflects what is most important to each child’s quality of life.

We also place strong emphasis on making therapy engaging and enjoyable wherever possible. Sessions are adapted to each child’s communication style, attention level, and physical abilities, using sensory input, music, movement, play-based activities, and specialist equipment to encourage participation and positive experiences.

Our Physiotherapy Support May Include:

We may also use specialist physiotherapy approaches where appropriate, including hydrotherapy, gentle movement facilitation, supported standing programmes, sensory-based therapy, and postural care programmes. All interventions are carefully adapted to the child’s comfort, energy levels, and individual presentation.

We work closely with families, schools, consultants, and wider multidisciplinary teams to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach. Our focus is always on supporting each child’s comfort, dignity, participation, and quality of life, while helping families feel informed, supported, and involved at every stage.

At Mini Wonders, we are committed to providing thoughtful, responsive physiotherapy that adapts with the child, supporting both physical wellbeing and meaningful engagement in daily life.
